In this episode I go over the teaching of Jesus Christ about the good Samaritan and I provide 3 things to implement to help us to love our neighbor as ourselves. I pair this with scripture and prayer.
Today's episode is part 2 of a new series that I'm doing on the Teachings of Jesus Christ. Last week we went into the teaching of judging others, so if you haven't already make sure you go and check that episode out.
First I want to say a quick prayer.... Lord I pray that you lift up every single person reading this right now. I pray that you open up our eyes to see the truth of your words, that you open up our hearts to receive the love that you give and for us to give love to others, and I pray that you open up our ears to hear your words. Lord please give us knowledge, understanding, and wisdom to be able to implement these things that we learn in our daily lives. I love you with my whole heart. In Jesus' name, Amen.
So let's get into this teaching on the good Samaritan:
25 "On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "What must I do to inherit eternal life?"
26 "What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it? "
27 He answered: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' "
28 "You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live."
29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"
30 In reply Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an Inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.'
36 "Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?"
37 The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him."
Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise." -Luke 10:25-37
In this parable of the good Samaritan we can see here where it says, "love your neighbor as yourself," but your neighbor is not just the person that lives next door to you. Anyone that you pass by on the street, see at the grocery store, or wherever you're going, that person is your neighbor. Whenever we see someone that needs help we should always offer a helping hand, take care of them, and be kind to them just like we would our own family member. We can get so caught up in our busy lives that we disregard others without even meaning to. Or maybe we feel like it's not our place, like the priest and the Levite that passed by that man on the other side, maybe they felt like it wasn't their place to help him.
There could be a million reasons why we don't offer a helping hand and take care of our neighbor, but Jesus teaches us to be like the good Samaritan that sees the person in trouble, sees the person that needs help, takes care of them, puts them on their own donkey, and shows them compassion and love. That's the type of person that we should be. When we're believers of Christ, we're following Christ, we're seeking to be like him, we have to be like the good Samaritan and not like the priest and Levite that just passed by on the other side. We should actually help those in need and not just disregard them or feel like it's not our place, because we're always put in places and in situations for a reason. If we are there at that specific time when someone needs help, we have to help them. There's a reason why we're there. Jesus had compassion for everyone and he healed the broken and the wounded. We always want to seek to be more like Jesus. Now Jesus is perfect, and as humans, as sinners, we're never going to be able to reach perfection, but we can always strive to follow him and be more like him.
Here are a few other verses that are pertaining to doing good to others and loving others:
"So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets" -Matthew 7:12
"The entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbor as yourself." -Galatians 5:14
"Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers" -Galatians 6:10
So even in our times of stress, or maybe we're having a bad day, we're having a hard time, through any and every circumstance we should always be good to others, lend a helping hand to our neighbor, and love our neighbor (which isn't just the person next door to us but anyone around us.) We need to love them as ourselves or as someone in our direct family that we love so much. We have to show that same compassion and love to others and do to others as we would want done to us. If we were laying on the side of the road, needing help, and we're half dead, we would want someone to come and take us on their donkey, take care of us, take us to an inn and all of that.
So in every situation in life, no matter what circumstances we're going through or what struggles we have, we have to make sure that we are staying mindful and having compassion for others, no matter what. It's so important to love the Lord with all our heart, all of our strength, all of our mind, love our neighbor as ourselves, to have that compassion, and to strive to be more like Jesus, Whenever we're saved and we have the Holy Spirit within us, we have the fruit of the spirit, we have love joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. We just have to ask God to reveal the fruit in our hearts and ask the Holy Spirit to guide us so that we can portray the fruit of the Spirit to others.
These are the three takeaways from this teaching:
Write these down, put them in the notes in your phone, or however you want to do it, but these are 3 things to live by.
1. Have compassion
- We need to have compassion for everyone, not just people that we like, family members ,or loved ones, but for everyone,
2. Always do good to others, no matter what
- No matter how we're feeling and no matter who the person is, we have to do good to others and just show that compassion.
- Jesus didn't only perform miraculous signs or heal people that were righteous or did good, he healed the broken and the wounded. He forgave sinners. He sat with sinners.
- We can't only do good to the people that we want to do good to, or only associate with other people that are like us, we have to do good to everyone, always strive to be more like Jesus, have that compassion, and do good to others, even if we may not feel like it or if it may be uncomfortable for us.
3. Always offer a helping hand
-We don't want to be like the priest or the Levite that just passed by on the other side, we want to be like the good Samaritan that takes the person that needs help and cares for them and shows them compassion and does to them just like we would want to be done to us.
So those are the three takeaways and the three things that I want you guys to always remember. It's not always going to be easy being that person that's compassionate, loving, and wants to help others, especially when we have a lot of things going on in our life. We all have our own struggles and circumstances that we can't change, but whenever we pray, we seek to have a close relationship with Christ, we're letting the Holy Spirit guide us, we're studying our Bibles, and were taking into consideration and really practicing the teachings of Jesus Christ, then we will be able to portray the fruit of the Spirit to others and to have that compassion and love. The more that we do these things, then caring for our neighbors, even if they're strangers to us, will come more naturally to us. Doing good for others is so rewarding. Even if we don't get anything in return, that's not the reward. The reward is just having that complete joy, spiritual abundance, and just having a happy heart knowing that you did all that you could to help someone in need.
So I hope this episode helped you guys to really know and understand the parable of the good Samaritan. I hope that you take these three things into consideration through every aspect of your life and that you make sure that you're having compassion, loving others, being good to others, and treating others the way you would want to be treated. Next week will be part 3 of the teachings of Jesus Christ, so make sure you stay tuned for that.
I love you guys so much.
