Alright, I want to say a quick prayer... Lord I pray that you lift up every single person reading this right now. I pray that you open up our eyes to see the truth of your words and the truth that you're speaking into our lives right now. Please give us knowledge and understanding to know exactly what it is that we're reading and how to implement it in our daily lives. Lord use us as a vessel for your work and work through us to make an impact in other people's lives. Lord please lead, guide, and direct us through every aspect of our lives. I love you with my whole heart. In Jesus' name, Amen.

John Chapter 18 Part 2:

28 Then the Jews led Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness the Jews did not enter the palace; they wanted to be able to eat the Passover. 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, "What charges are you bringing against this man?" 30 "If he were not a criminal," they replied, "we would not have handed him over to you." 31 Pilate said, "Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law." "But we have no right to execute anyone," the Jews objected. 32 This happened so that the words Jesus had spoken indicating the kind of death he was going to die would be fulfilled.

So I'm going to stop right there and discuss these verses with you guys here. So in verse 28, the Jewish leaders refuse to break small commands (such as defilement or ceremonial uncleanness to be able to eat the Passover), but they were okay with breaking the big command of rejecting Jesus (rejecting the Son of God) and wanting to put an innocent man to death. Jesus Christ had done nothing, he lived a sinless life, he was guilty of nothing, and they wanted to put him to death because of their own pride and the hatred in their hearts. What John says in this verse here in 28 just shows the hypocrisy of the Jewish leaders. Then in verse 31 Pilate wanted the Jewish leaders to judge Jesus by their own law and to take him themselves, because he didn't want any part of it.

33 Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" 34 "Is that your own idea," Jesus asked, "or did others talk to you about me?" 35 "Am I a Jew?" Pilate replied. "It was your people and your chief priests who handed you over to me. What is it you have done?" 36 Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place." 37 "You are a King then!" said Pilate. Jesus answered, "You are right in saying that I am a King. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."

38 "What is truth?" Pilate asked. With this he went out again to the Jews and said, "I find no basis for a charge against him. 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release 'the king of the Jews'?" 40 They shouted back, "No, not him! Give us Barabbas!" Now Barabbas had taken part in a rebellion."

Alright, so those are all the verses of chapter 18 of the book of John but I'm going to discuss these verses with you guys here. So Pilate went back inside the palace and asked Jesus if he was King of the Jews. We see a lot in the book of John that Jesus asked questions. Most of the time Jesus didn't just give a straight out answer, but he would ask questions back to other people's questions and that's what he did here in verse 34. In verse 36 Jesus said that his kingdom was not of this world (and we know that his kingdom is in heaven). Jesus knew exactly what was going to happen. He knew that his crucifixion was going to happen and his resurrection, so his servants (his disciples) didn't fight to prevent his arrest because the will of God the Father had to be done and his crucifixion had to happen in order to forgive us of our sins.

Then in verse 37 Pilate said then Jesus is a King and then Jesus answered that he is a King and for that reason he was born. Jesus is the King above all Kings. He is the Savior of the world. The ones that God the Father has chosen for Jesus will listen to him and they're on the side of truth, they walk in truth, and they're his disciples, but the people that have hate in their hearts and are full of lies and deception, they refuse to believe in Jesus and follow him. Jesus was born to live on the earth as a man, live a sinless life, die on the cross for our sins, to forgive us of our sins, so that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.

In verse 38 Pilate asked, "What is truth?" But it doesn't say that he asked it to Jesus or that he got a response, so it seems here that he was self-reflecting on this. With this he went out to the Jews again and said that he finds no basis for a charge against Jesus. Pilate wanted to release Jesus back to them. From his conversation with Jesus, he knew that he was innocent. In verse 40 we see that these Jews rejected Jesus and they chose Barabbas. It seems here that Pilate hoped that they would spare Jesus, but they condemned him instead. So these Jewish leaders and other people were so full of evil and corruption that they were trying to kill the Son of God. They saw Jesus as a threat and had hate in their hearts. These people weren't spiritually blind because all the words that Jesus had spoken to them opened their eyes, but they still refused to believe in him and recognize that they were in the wrong.

John Ch 18 Part 2 Study Guide

  1. What does John show about these Jews in verse 28?

  2. Why did Jesus’ disciples not fight to prevent his arrest?

  3. Why was Jesus born on this earth?

  4. Why did Pilate keep telling the Jews that he didn’t find a basis for a charge against Jesus?

  5. In verse 40, why did the Jews choose to release Barabbas instead of Jesus?

  6. Do you see any similarities between the Jews in this Bible study and some people in the world today? Explain your answer.

  7. What is your biggest takeaway from this Bible study?

The world today is also full of hate and darkness and that's why as Christians, as Jesus' disciples, we have to be a light and spread the gospel. Not everyone will listen to us or accept us, but we have to be fully submitted to Jesus and to the will of God the Father, stand firm in our faith, and stay faithful to the calling that God has placed on our hearts. It's so important for us to not let pride and arrogance get in the way, especially with the way that the world is today. There are so many prideful people in this world and people who worship themselves, and that's not okay. We have to be a light, walk in the truth, and let people know about Jesus Christ, how he died on the cross to forgive us of our sins and rose 3 days later, and whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life in heaven with Jesus and with God the Father.

So that concludes our Bible study on John chapter 18. Next week we'll get into chapter 19 of the book of John so stay tuned for that.

I love you guys so much.
