Lord, please open up our eyes, our ears, our minds, and our hearts to you. Please continue to lead, guide, and direct us through every aspect of our lives. I pray that whatever it is that each person is supposed to receive from this Bible study, they receive it and implement it in their daily lives. I love you with every ounce of my being. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Luke Chapter 7 Part 2:

18 John’s disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of them, 19 he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”

20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”

21 At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. 22 So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. 23 Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me.”

Alright, so I'm going to stop right there and discuss these verses with you guys here. In verses 20-23, at the time where two of John's disciples came to Jesus to ask him if he was the one to come or if they should expect someone else, they saw all these miraculous signs of Jesus curing many with diseases, sicknesses, and evil spirits, and gave sight to those who were blind. In verse 22, Jesus told John's disciples to go back to John and report to him all that they had seen and heard. Jesus wanted to assure John and his disciples that he was the Messiah. Jesus' great power was shown through these humble acts of service of him curing and healing all of these people. What Jesus said in verse 23, he knew that the way that his focus of the ministry was where he was doing these humble acts of service would be offensive to what the Jewish people expected of the Messiah.

24 After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 25 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’

28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

29 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John. 30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)

In verses 24-27, Jesus explained that John was a great man of God and he was a chosen prophet of God to prepare the way for Jesus. The verse that Jesus quoted here in verse 27 is from Malachi chapter 3 verse 1. What Jesus said in verse 28, John was greater than all of the prophets because he had the privilege of saying that Jesus was there instead of the prophets from the Old Testament were saying that Jesus was coming. John was alive in the time that Jesus was alive.

In verses 29-30, the people that were baptized by John acknowledged that God's way was right. John baptized people with water and preached a baptism of repentance. So all the people that repented for their sins and were baptized by John, knew that God's way was right. But these religious leaders and experts in the law hadn't been baptized by John and they rejected God's purpose for them. They thought that their ways were right, they didn't think that they had anything to repent for and that they were just going to make it to heaven because they were religious leaders and experts in the law and they followed the law of man.

31 “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:

“‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’

33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ 35 But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”

Alright, so I'm going to stop right there and discuss these verses with you guys here. In verses 31-32, Jesus compares this generation to children sitting in a marketplace, because these people were not certain in receiving God's message and his messengers. They didn't fully believe and they didn't know if they should receive the message of Jesus or not. Those who have the heart to criticize, that's exactly what they will do is criticize, just like the religious leaders and the Pharisees. Those types of people are not going to be pleased with either John or Jesus. Just like Jesus says in verses 33-34, the people said that John the Baptist had a demon because he wasn't eating bread or drinking wine and he was speaking the truth. John spoke very plainly and let people know about themselves and they said he had a demon. Whenever the Son of Man, which is Jesus Christ, came and was eating and drinking, then these people said that he was a glutton, a drunkard, and he was a friend of tax collectors and sinners. So these people didn't accept either John or Jesus and they had two completely different ways of life.

In verse 35, what Jesus is saying here is that a wise person is proven to be wise by their actions (or like he says, their children). So a wise person is going to have the wisdom to be able to accept both John and Jesus Christ for who they are. These people that don't accept John or Jesus Christ are not wise, even if they know all the words from the Old Testament, they know every law, they are an expert in the law, they are religious leaders, or whatever the case may be, if they don't accept John the Baptist and Jesus Christ then they don't have wisdom.

36 Now one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, so he went to the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table. 37 When a woman who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume, 38 and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is--that she is a sinner." 40 Jesus answered him, "Simon, I have something to tell you." "Tell me, teacher," he said.

41 "Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more? 43 Simon replied, "I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled." "You have judged correctly," Jesus said.

44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven--for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little."

48 Then Jesus said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." 49 The other guests began to say among themselves, "Who is this who even forgives sins?" 50 Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

Alright, so those are all of the verses of part 2 of chapter 7 of the book of Luke, but I'm going to discuss these verses with you guys here. So in this story here we see that Jesus is loving, merciful, gracious, compassionate, and he will not turn away from anyone who comes to him and shows him love. This woman was a sinner. She had done a lot of things in her lifetime and you can tell from this story here that she was ashamed and she just so desperately wanted mercy, love, and grace from Jesus. From the moment she saw him, she wept at his feet, wiped his feet with her hair, poured perfume on his feet, and just showed so much love to him and so much respect for him. The Pharisee that had invited Jesus over and was judging to himself and Jesus explained the story to him about two men owing a moneylender money and the moneylender canceling both of their debts. Jesus said this to show that this sinful woman had done a lot in her life and loved Jesus much, because of all the things that she's done.

I can relate to this story so much because I have done a lot in my lifetime. I have done things that I'm not proud of, things that I've had to repent for, and really just give it all to God, ask for forgiveness, seek to follow Jesus, and do better and not be conformed by this world or worldly desires. Jesus doesn't turn away from sinners. Jesus doesn't turn away from people because they've done a lot in their lifetime. He can see our hearts. He knows everything about us. He knows all that we've done. Jesus appreciates us, as sinners, that know that we are sinners and know that we've done wrong, and that love him and come to him, ask for forgiveness, and ask for that mercy, grace, and that show him our heart. He welcomes people like that even more than people like the Pharisee Simon that judged this woman based on her being a sinner, that didn't give him water for his feet, or kiss him, and didn't show him all the love that this woman showed him.

Here are 3 takeaways to write down:

1. John the Baptist was a prophet chosen by God

2. Some people didn't accept John or Jesus

3. Jesus forgives and loves everyone who comes to him and acknowledges their guilt and asks for forgiveness
