I did want to say a quick prayer... Lord, I pray that you lift up every single person reading this right now. Please open up our eyes, our ears, our hearts, and our minds to you Lord. Holy Spirit please guide us and help us to see the truth, know the truth, discern the truth, and live by the truth. I pray that whatever it is that each person is supposed to receive from this Bible study, they receive it and implement it in their daily lives. Lord, I can't thank you enough for every single thing that you've done and continue to do. I love you with every ounce of my being. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Luke Chapter 22 Part 2:
39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.
45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
What Jesus says in verse 40, it's so important for us to pray continuously for strength and to make sure we don't fall into temptation. There are so many things in this world that will tempt us and so many lies and deception in this world that we have to make sure that we are in constant prayer and asking for everything that we need to stand up to temptation. In verse 42, Jesus knew that he had to die on the cross to forgive us of our sins, but he prayed to God the Father and asked if he was willing to take the cup from him. Jesus was fully man and fully God, and he was in agony because he knew that he would be crucified and that it had to happen to complete his work on earth. Jesus prayed to God the Father and asked if there was any way to take the cup from him, but he was fully submitted to the will of God the Father.
In verses 43-44, an angel of heaven appeared to Jesus and strengthened him. Jesus was in agony and he just kept praying and praying and leaned on God the Father for strength to be able to complete his mission on the earth. Whenever we are going through things, we know that we have to do something that we are afraid to do, or whatever the case may be, we have to just continue to pray to the Lord, ask for the strength, and be fully submitted to His will no matter what. If that is the only way and we know that we have to do this, he will give us strength and we just have to be submitted to His will and be in constant prayer.
47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?” 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.
51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.
52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour—when darkness reigns.”
In verses 47-48, while Jesus was still speaking to his disciples a crowd came up and Judas was there to betray Jesus. Judas was one of the Twelve, he followed Jesus everywhere, and he knew the place where Jesus went to be alone and that was at the Mount of Olives. So Judas went there with the Cheif priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders to arrest Jesus. In verse 48, Jesus knew that Judas had come to betray him.
In verses 49-50, Jesus' disciples wanted to know if they should strike these people with their swords. It says that one of them struck the servant of the high priest but this "one" was Peter. We saw this from our Bible study in chapter 18 of the book of John that it was Simon Peter who cut off this man's ear. In verse 51, Jesus knew that his arrest had to happen to complete his work with the crucifixion, resurrection, and then him ascending back to heaven. Jesus didn't want violence, chaos, and all of that, he knew that the time had come and he was ready and willing to do what needed to be done to complete his work.
In verses 52-53, Jesus had been teaching every day at the temple courts and they had seen him teaching and spreading the gospel and they didn't do anything to him, as we know they were afraid of the people, and his time hadn't come yet for his arrest and for the completion of his work. But Jesus was wondering why they came with swords and clubs because he wasn't leading any type of rebellion. He was out in the open teaching and spreading the gospel, it wasn't like he was trying to hide anything or rebel against them. At that moment it was the time for Jesus' arrest and for the completion of his work to begin.
54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. 55 But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”
57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.
58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”
“Man, I am not!” Peter replied.
59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”
60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
So in these verses here we see that Peter denied Jesus 3 times. He was afraid of what these people might do to him if they knew he was a disciple of Jesus so he pretended to not know him, not only once but 3 different times. Then in verse 60, after Peter denied Jesus for the third time the rooster crowed. In verse 61, Jesus had turned and looked straight at Peter after the rooster crowed. He had told Peter in our Bible study from yesterday that before the rooster crowed Peter would deny him 3 times, and so after that happened Jesus looked straight at Peter and it made him remember what Jesus had told him. In verse 62, Peter was so ashamed of what he had just done and he wept bitterly. Peter loved Jesus so much and he gave in to the fear and temptation of denying Jesus because he was afraid and he made a huge mistake, not only 1 but 3 because he denied him 3 times and he felt so ashamed after this.
63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” 65 And they said many other insulting things to him.
66 At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. 67 “If you are the Christ,” they said, “tell us.”
Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer. 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”
70 They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?”
He replied, “You are right in saying that I am.”
71 Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”
Alright, so those are all of the verses of part 2 of chapter 22 of the book of Luke, but I'm going to discuss these verses with you guys here. In verse 67, these chief priests and teachers of the law wanted Jesus to tell them if he was the Christ, but they wouldn't believe him anyway. They had hate in their hearts and they were already set on hating Jesus, persecuting him, and killing him. In verses 68-69, Jesus knew that these people had hate in their hearts, they wouldn't believe him, and he knew that his time was coming for his crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension back to heaven, and he would be seated at the right hand of God the Father, So in verse 70 they said, "then are you the Son of God?" and he told them that they were right in saying this. Jesus is God the Son and these people were so set in their ways and had evil and wicked hearts, that they didn't realize that the Son of God was right there with them and that the Christ, the Messiah, the Savior of the World was Jesus. In verse 71 because Jesus said they were right in saying that he was the Son of God, they thought that they didn't need any more testimony than that and that they could kill him because he was blaspheming and claiming to be the Son of God, even though he is God the Son.
Here are 3 takeaways to write down:
1. We have to stay in constant prayer
2. Peter was ashamed that he disowned Jesus 3 times
3. Jesus Christ, the Son of Man, sits at the right hand of God the Father
