First I want to say a quick prayer... Lord I pray that you lift up every single person reading this right now. Please give us knowledge and understanding to know exactly what it is that we're reading and how to implement it in our daily lives. Work through us to make an impact in other people's lives and use us as a vessel for your work Lord. I pray that you open up our eyes to see the truth of your words, you open up our ears, our mind, our heart, and our soul to you Lord. I pray that we're receptive to the truth that you are speaking in our lives and that we go out and spread the gospel to others and let others know about you and how amazing you are. I love you with my whole heart. In Jesus' name, Amen.
John Chapter 13 Part 2:
18 "I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: 'He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.' 19 "I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am He. 20 I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me." 21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, "I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me."
22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which one of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which one he means." 25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?"
26 Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. "What you are about to do, do quickly." Jesus told him, 28 but no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought that Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the Feast, or to give something to the poor. 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.
I'm going to stop right there and discuss these versus with you guys here. So what Jesus said in verse 18, he knew who would betray him and he would stay faithful to him. Then the scripture here in verse 18 that he's referring to is Psalm 41:9. Like we know from part 1 of chapter 13 that the devil had already prompted Judas to betray Jesus, so what happened in verse 26 was to fulfill Psalm 41:9. Then in verse 27 Jesus' disciples didn't understand what he was saying to Judas. Even though he had just told them that the one he would give the bread to that he's dipped in the dish is the one that betrays him, but they still weren't seeing the bigger picture. So they didn't know what Jesus meant when he was speaking to Judas, but Judas went out to betray Jesus.
31 When he was gone, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. 33 My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told that Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.
34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
36 Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later." 37 Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you." 38 Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!"
So that is all of the verses of chapter 13, but I'm going to discuss these versus with you guys here. So in verses 31-33 Jesus was speaking of his crucifixion and his resurrection. He would be going back to heaven, but they wouldn't be able to come yet. Then in verses 34-35 Jesus commanded his disciples to love each other with pure and sacrificial love as he has loved them and how he also loves us. I know he's speaking to the 11 disciples at the time, but when we're Christians, we're saved, and we follow Jesus, we are also his disciples so he's also speaking to us. He commands us to love one another just as he loves us. That pure sacrificial and unconditional love. If his disciples show that pure love to each other then everyone will know that they are disciples of Jesus Christ (that we are disciples of Jesus.) That pure love can only come from someone that truly loves and follows Jesus. People of this world are full of hatred and deception and that pure love only comes from following Christ, loving him with all of our hearts, and showing that love to others.
So then in verse 36 where he says, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later," as disciples of Jesus Christ when we're saved and we have the Holy spirit within us, we have eternal life through Jesus Christ. So when it's our time to go we'll be going to heaven with Jesus. So that's what he means here, later when it's their time to go they will be going to heaven. Then in verse 38 Jesus predicts Peter's denial (which we're going to see that in further chapters where Peter denied Jesus three times.) Peter is so bold he says that he will lay down his life for the Lord and he would never disown him, but that just goes to show that we always have to guard our hearts and stand firm (which we're going to learn further why I said guard our hearts and stand firm in our faith.) Sometimes the intentions that we have are pure and sometimes what we plan to do or what we intend to do is different from what actually happens.
