First I want to say a quick prayer... Lord I pray that you lift up every single person reading this right now. I pray that you open up our eyes to see the truth of your words. I pray that you give us knowledge and understanding to know exactly what it is that we're reading and how to implement it in our daily lives. And I pray that you lead, guide, and direct us through every aspect of our lives. I love you with my whole heart. In Jesus' name, Amen.

John Chapter 19 Part 1:

1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. 2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe 3 and went up to him again and again, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they struck him in the face.

4 Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews, "Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him." 5 When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, "Here is the man!" 6 As soon as the chief priest and their officials saw him, they shouted, "Crucify! Crucify!" But Pilate answered, "You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him."

I'm going to stop right there and discuss these verses with you guys here. So these verses start where we left off on part 2 of chapter 18. In verse 1 where it says "Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged," flogged means "whipped or beaten with whips or lashes." In verses 2-3 these people were mocking Jesus. They had so much hate in their hearts and they were condemning the only one that can save them. Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. These Jews could not see past their stubborn hearts and their evil ways and they thought by their law that they were doing a service to God by crucifying Jesus. But we know from these Bible studies that if you don't love and believe in Jesus Christ, then you don't truly know God and you don't truly believe in God the Father, because they're 3 in 1 (It's God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit). Then in verse 4 Pilate knew that Jesus was innocent. He could tell that he was innocent just by speaking to him and he let these Jews know that he had no basis for a charge against Jesus, but the Jews didn't want to listen. They just wanted him to be crucified and Pilate told them to take him and crucify him themselves.

7 The Jews insisted, "We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God." 8 When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, 9 and went back inside the palace. "Where do you come from?" he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer. 10 "Do you refuse to speak to me?" Pilate said. "Don't you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?"

11 Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin."

12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jews kept shouting, "If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar." 13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge's seat at the place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha.) 14 It was the day of Preparation of Passover Week, about the sixth hour. "Here is your king, Pilate said to the Jews. 15 But they shouted, "Take him away!" "Take him away!" "Crucify him!" "Shall I crucify your King?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered. 16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.

So these are all the verses that I'm going to read here in part 1 of chapter 19, but I'm going to discuss these verses with you guys here. So in verses 7-11 when Pilate heard that Jesus claimed to be the Son of God, he was even more afraid, so he went in and asked Jesus where he came from, but Jesus wouldn't answer him. Jesus knew that his mission on earth and the will of God the Father was about to be fulfilled and he stayed fully submitted to the Father and his will even in his final hours. Jesus said in verse 11 that Pilate would have no power over him if it weren't given to him from above. In verse 12, again Pilate didn't want to charge Jesus, he wanted to set him free, but they kept saying that if he let him go then he wouldn't be a friend of Caesar's.

In verses 13-16 Pilate brought Jesus out and even though Pilate knew that Jesus was innocent, he was afraid because of what they were saying that he would be no friend of Caesar's. All of these Jews were insisting on crucifying Jesus, so Pilate brought Jesus out. In these verses here you see Pilate calling Jesus their King. He doesn't say that Jesus claimed to be their King, he says, "Here is your King," and "Shall I crucify your King?" Pilate believed that Jesus was who he said he was and he knew he was innocent, but these other Jews had hate in their heart and they didn't believe in Jesus. These Jews just wanted to condemn Jesus and they wanted him to be crucified, so finally Pilate handed him over to be crucified. In the next episode we're going to go into the crucifixion, the death of Jesus, and his burial. That episode will upload on good Friday so stay tuned for that.

John Ch 19 Part 1 Study Guide

  1. In verse 3, why were the Jews saying this to Jesus?

  2. In verse 9, why do you think that Jesus didn’t answer Pilate?

  3. Why were these Jews insisting on crucifying Jesus?

  4. In verses 13-16, why did Pilate keep calling Jesus their King?

  5. What is your biggest takeaway from this Bible study?

The most important thing in our lives and in this world is having a relationship with Christ and letting other people know about Jesus Christ, how he died on the cross for our sins and rose 3 days later, and whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. We as Christians, we as believers and disciples of Jesus Christ, have to spread the gospel and let other people know about Jesus and truly understand the truth of God's words and what happened during the time of his crucifixion and resurrection. So I will see you guys on good Friday for part 2 of chapter 19 of the book of John.

I love you guys so much.
