Part 3 of John Chapter 4:
43 After the two days he left for Galilee. 44 (Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.) 45 When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover feast, for they also had been there.
46 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
So I'm just going to stop here real quick and discuss a few things with you guys. First, where it says that "Jesus himself pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country," Jesus grew up in Galilee. In Galilee they didn't honor Jesus the way that they should, because they felt familiar with him. But it doesn't really explain that the country that he was speaking of, if it was Judea or Galilee, because he left from Judea to go to Galilee. Whenever he arrived in Galilee, they welcomed him and they'd seen all he had done at the Passover feast. So just like we saw in chapter two at the Jewish Passover, Jesus cleared the temple and then also he had spoken about his resurrection. He told them to destroy the temple and he would raise it again three days later, and the temple that he was speaking of was his body.
So these people in Galilee said that they saw all he had done because they had also been there. Then Jesus went and visited Cana, which is where he performed his first miracle that was recorded in the book of John, which was turning water to wine at a wedding in Cana, in Galilee. There was a Royal official whose son was sick, a Capernaum. This man had came to Galilee from Judea, so he traveled about 20 miles, to see Jesus and beg him to come and heal his son.
48 "Unless you people see miraculous signs and wonders," Jesus told him, "you will never believe." 49 The Royal official said, "Sir, come down before my child dies."
50 Jesus replied, "You may go. Your son will live."
So here it may seem that Jesus was being a little harsh when he said that, "unless people see miraculous signs and wonders, you'll never believe," but there were many parents that were coming to see Jesus because of their sick children. A lot of people were just wanting him to perform these miraculous signs in order for them to believe in him. He rebuked those who depended on these signs before they would believe. He wanted to show that faith is more than just seeing a miraculous sign. So whenever he said, "you may go. Your son will live," that was him testing the mans faith because he had to believe in Jesus' word alone. The man couldn't see a physical sign because Jesus didn't go and perform the miraculous sign of healing his son. So this man had to travel back 20 miles to see his son and just take Jesus' word that he had healed his son without actually seeing it with his own eyes.
50 Jesus replied, "You may go. Your son will live." The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. 52 When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, "The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour."
53 Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live." So he and all his household believed. 54 This was the second miraculous sign that Jesus performed, having come from Judea to Galilee.
So the Royal official took Jesus' word and on his way to see if his son was living, his servants met him with the news telling him that his boy was living. The exact time that his son got better is the moment that Jesus said "Your son will live," so that automatically that made him and all his household believe. The man already obviously had some faith that Jesus was going to do it, because he took his word and headed over to see his son instead of begging for Jesus to come with him so he could see the miraculous sign with his own eyes.
This just goes to show in life for us, that we have to have faith. We're not going to see these miraculous signs and Jesus works in his own time. Whenever we ask for things we may not get it right away, and we have to just have faith and know that Jesus will come through for us. It's so important to have faith, to stand firm in our faith, know that Jesus has got us, and we just have to trust and believe.
John Ch 4 Study Guide Part 3
In verse 48, why did Jesus say this to the royal official?
Why did Jesus tell the man to go to his son, instead of going with him and letting the man see him perform the miraculous sign?
Did the royal official have Faith in Jesus?
What do the Bible verses that we read today teach us about our Faith?
What is your biggest takeaway from this Bible Study?
Before I let you guys go, I want to say a quick prayer.... Lord, I pray that you lift up every single person reading this right now.
