First I want to say a quick prayer... Lord, I pray that you lift up every single person reading this right now. Please open up our eyes, our ears, our minds, and our hearts to you Lord. Please give us knowledge and understanding to know exactly what it is that we're reading and the wisdom to implement it in our daily lives. Lord, I pray that whatever it is that each person is supposed to receive from this Bible study, they receive it and they implement it in their daily life. I love you with every ounce of my being. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Luke Chapter 4 Part 1:
1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
3 The devil said to him, "If you are the son of God, tell this stone to become bread."
4 Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone.' "
5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, "I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 So if you worship me, it will all be yours."
8 Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.' "
9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:
" 'He will command his angels concerning you
to guard you carefully;
11 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.' "
12 Jesus answered, "It says: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.' "
13 When the Devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.
Alright, so these are all the verses that I'm going to read in part 1 of Chapter 4 of the book of Luke, but I'm going to discuss all of these verses with you guys here. So Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the desert and he fasted for 40 days. So he didn't have anything to eat for 40 days and he was hungry and the devil tempted him 3 different times. In verses 3-4, the devil was trying to get Jesus to use his power for selfish reasons. The verse that Jesus used in response to the devil was from Deuteronomy chapter 8 verse 3. I'm just going to read that verse with you guys here real quick. Actually, I'm going to read verses 2-3 of Chapter 8 of Deuteronomy. 2 "Remember how the Lord your God lead you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. 3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord." So we can't live on bread alone but on every word from God. God speaks the truth, he created us, and he can provide for us anything that we need, but we have to listen to him, obey him, and humble ourselves under his mighty hand and he will provide for us everything that we need.

In verses 5-8, the devil knew that Jesus would inherit the kingdoms of the world and be the king of all kings, but the devil was tempting him and telling him that he was just going to give him all of these things without him having to die on the cross and without having to make that sacrifice. And that all Jesus would have to do is worship the devil. The verse that Jesus used in response to the devil was in Deuteronomy chapter 6 verse 13 and that verse says: "Fear the Lord your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name." So we should only worship God and we should have a healthy fear of the Lord. No matter how good it may seem, or what people tell us about the things they're going to give us, or how the devil tempts us,
we have to stand firm in our faith and know that we should only worship and serve the Lord. We shouldn't worship false idols, false gods, the devil, or anyone else but the Lord our God.
In verses 9-12, the devil told Jesus to throw himself down from the highest point of the temple and that his angels would protect him. He used verses 11-12 from Psalm 91 to tempt Jesus. This just goes to show that the devil knows all of the Bible and he can recite the words from the Bible, but he doesn't go by them. Just because people of this world can recite the Bible and they know it from cover to cover does not necessarily mean that they follow the Lord and they live in the way that the Lord wants them to. They could be using these words to deceive others and make it look like they're Godly people. So that's why it's so important for us to pray, ask for discernment, and open our eyes to see the truth. The verse that Jesus used in response to the devil was from Deuteronomy chapter 6 verse 16. We should never put the Lord our God to the test. He is the Almighty, He's our Creator, and we should trust in him completely and not ever try to test him. And that's what the devil was wanting Jesus to do by telling him to throw himself off the highest point of the temple. Then in verse 13, once the devil had done all this tempting he left Jesus until he had another chance to tempt him again.
So Jesus was tempted 3 times by the devil and he resisted him each time. Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit, he was fully submitted to the will of God the Father, and he used scripture as a weapon against the devil. He didn't have to go into this long reasoning of why he wasn't going to do what the devil wanted him to do or contemplate if he was going to do it or not, he just used scripture as a response each time, stood firm in his faith, and never faltered.
Here are 3 things that we can do to help us stand firm in our faith and stand up under temptation:
1. Let the Holy Spirit guide us
- We need to ask the Holy Spirit to show us the truth and help us to see the truth,
know the truth, discern the truth, and live by the truth.
- When we're being guided by the Holy Spirit, that's going to help us to be able to stand firm in our faith and stand up under temptation.
2. Pray
- Not just to pray in the morning or at night, but be in constant prayer and God will give us everything that we need to stand up under temptation and to resist it.
- We can ask God for that strength, guidance, and everything that we need.
3. Study the Bible
- Really practice the things that we study, see the truth of God's words, and make sure that we're praying and asking to see the truth and help us to see it, know it, understand it, and live by it.
- Whenever we are being tempted we can use scripture as our weapon, just like Jesus did, and we can memorize these scriptures but also live by them.
- Not just memorize them and be able to site them like the devil but really live by the scripture, follow the commands of the Lord, and seek to live and have a heart like Jesus.
Luke Ch 4 Part 1 Study Guide

Who should we worship?
Should we test the Lord? Why or why not?
Why did Jesus respond to the devil in scripture each time he was tempted?
How did Jesus resist the temptations of the devil?
What are 3 things that we can do to stand up under temptation?
What is your biggest takeaway from this Bible study?
So that concludes this Bible study on part 1 of chapter 4 of the Book of Luke. Tomorrow we're going to go into part 2, so make sure you stay tuned for that.
