This episode is part 2 of the ways to rest our souls in Jesus Christ. Today I go over finding rest for our weary souls through prayer. I pair this with scripture and guidelines for prayer.
This episode is part 2 of a 4 part series that I started. So in episode 107 last week we went into resting in the word of Jesus Christ. In episode 101 is whenever I first started talking about these 4 different things that I'm going over within these 4 weeks. After prayer and really just thinking about it, I decided to go more into depth with these things. So last week we went into resting in the words of Jesus Christ. If you haven't checked out that episode, you definitely want to go check that out. Now today we're going to go all into resting in prayer.
First I want to say quick prayer... Lord I pray that you lift up every single person reading this right now. I pray that you open up our eyes to see the truth of your words, that you open up our heart to receive the love that you have for us, and for us to give love to others. I pray that you open up our mind to have knowledge and wisdom. Whatever it is that you want us to take out of this episode Lord, I pray that it's revealed to us, you show us the truth, and we're able to implement that in our daily lives. I love you with my whole heart. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Prayer is so powerful and it's a crucial part to maintaining your relationship with Christ. Throughout all of my episodes on this podcast I've talked about prayer so much and I always pray at the beginning of the episodes, because it's important for us to always pray. Any time that we're feeling tired, burdened, or exhausted, we can rest in prayer and know that God always hears us and he's right here with us.
So there's a few different scriptures that I want to put here pertaining to prayer:
"Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful."
-Colossians 4:2
"pray continually;" -1 Thessalonians 5:17
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." -Philippians 4:6-7
"Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you." -Jeremiah 29:12
So in all these verses here we see that prayer is so important and we should always pray continually, every single day, through every aspect of our lives. If we're feeling thankful, we should pray in thanksgiving and present our request to God. We should always be thankful for all that he's done for us, the things that he's given us, and also the things that he's taken away. His plans for us are greater than anything that we can ever imagine and even though something that we may have really wanted was taken from us, it was in our best interest. We can't even fathom the great plans that God has for us and we just have to persevere through the sufferings and know that God's got us. Whenever we pray we can receive peace, strength, and courage. Anything that we need we can get through Christ, through praying, asking for that, and truly believing that we're going to receive it.
When we pray this is our personal conversation with God. He knows our heart, our mind, our thoughts, and even if we can't muster up full sentences we can just posture our heart to the Lord, sit or kneel before him, and he will hear our hearts cry. I don't know about you guys, but I know when I'm just really feeling tired, exhausted, or anxious, I can't always muster up words to even comprehend how I'm feeling or to try and pray. So a lot of times what I'll do is I'll just get on my knees and I will posture my heart to the Lord. He knows what I'm thinking, what I'm feeling, he knows all of it. So I don't have to say anything to him for him to know what I want. I just have to be in his presence and sometimes I will just sit there and cry, I will say "Lord please help me," or just little simple things where I'm reaching out to him and I'm praying to him, even if I don't know what to say.
Here are some verses that are guidelines for prayer:
5 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like the pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9 "This, then, is how you should pray:
" 'Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.'
14 For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins." -Matthew 6:5-15
In these verses here this is Jesus teaching about prayer. These verses show us the guidelines for prayer and Jesus gives us a prayer to pray. With this prayer we don't always have to pray this specific prayer and that's it. That would just be a very generic way to have a relationship with Christ if we're always just praying the same thing. But this has guidelines to show us how to pray and not to just pray so other people will see what we're doing and all of that. Now praying in church, doing prayer circles, and different things like that are good and they're powerful, but we also have to make sure that we're praying in private. Like I said, praying is a personal conversation with God, and we don't have to announce it to the world or make sure that other people are seeing us pray. This is something that we should do for our relationship with Christ, resting in prayer, and maintaining that strong relationship with him. Also the value of our prayers aren't based on how many words we speak. Whenever we pray God knows our thoughts, he knows our minds, he knows all of it, and we don't have to say a thousand words in our prayer. We don't have to just spew out everything that we've ever wanted to say, because he knows everything. We just have to pray to him and have that personal conversation with him.
In verses 9-13 that I just read, this is the prayer that Jesus gave us to pray. God is our heavenly Father, he looks after us, he protects us, the Lord is the King above all Kings, and his will is going to be done in earth and heaven. When we pray we can repent and ask for forgiveness and ask to not be led into temptation. So whenever we are worried, tired, exhausted, anxious, or anytime that we're feeling anything, we can pray to the Lord. We can say this specific prayer or we can just have our personal conversation with him. Even if it's only a few words, even if we can't even muster up a full sentence, just kneeling or sitting before God, being in his presence, posturing our heart to him, giving it all to him, and humbling ourselves to him in prayer will help us to attain strength, peace, comfort, and all of the things that we need to get through each moment. We can find rest for our weary souls through prayer, through constantly, every single day, praying to the Lord. Anytime we're getting anxious, anytime we're thankful, anytime throughout the day we can pray and that'll help us to have true inner peace, to find rest for our souls in Jesus, and to rest in prayer.
So I hope this episode helped you guys to know that anytime you're feeling tired, exhausted, fearful, anxious, worried, or anything that you can find rest in prayer. You don't have to say a million things in your prayer, there's not specific things that you have to say in your prayer, it's just a personal conversation with God. Also with these verses that I read here we have guidelines for prayer to help you guys to know what to say. You can say that specific prayer or just whatever you want to say to God.
Next week we're going to go into resting in the presence of Jesus Christ, so make sure you stay tuned for that.
I love you guys so much.
