First I want to say a quick prayer... Lord, I pray that you lift up every single person reading this right now. Please open up our eyes to see the truth of your words and help us to know the truth, discern the truth, and live by the truth. Please give us knowledge and understanding to know exactly what it is that we're reading and the wisdom to implement it in our daily lives. I pray that whatever it is that each person is supposed to receive from this Bible study, they receive it and they implement it in their daily life. I love you with every ounce of my being. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Luke Chapter 7 Part 1:

1 When Jesus had finished saying all this in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. 2 There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. 3 The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. 4 When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, 5 because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” 6 So Jesus went with them.

He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. 7 That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” 10 Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.

Alright, so I'm going to discuss these verses with you guys here. So in verses 1-3, in Capernaum there was a centurion's servant that was sick and about to die. The centurion didn't think that he was worthy to meet Jesus and ask Him to heal his servant. So he sent some of the elders of the Jews to ask Jesus to heal his servant. In verses 4-5, when these elders came to Jesus they pleaded with him and they thought that the centurion was worthy to have Jesus do this. In verses 6-7, the centurion had some friends say to Jesus not to trouble himself to come to his house. The centurion didn't think that he was worthy to have the centurion come into his house but he knew the power and authority that Jesus had to be able to heal his servant.

In verse 8, the centurion knew how the commands of one that was in authority were obeyed because he, as a centurion, is an officer in the army and he commands 100 men. This just goes to show that the centurion understood the spiritual authority that Jesus has. In verses 9-10, the understanding that the centurion had of Jesus's spiritual authority made Jesus amazed. Jesus told the crowd that was following him that he hadn't seen such great faith even in Israel. Then the men returned to the house and they found the servant well. Jesus has such great spiritual authority that he doesn't have to be in the same house, same area, or anywhere near a person that needs to be healed and he can heal them. That is the power of Jesus Christ, and the centurion understood that and that's why Jesus was so amazed at the great faith that he had.

11 Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. 12 As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”

14 Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” 15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

16 They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.” 17 This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country.

Alright, so these are all the verses that I'm going to read in part 1 of Chapter 7 of the book of Luke, but I'm going to discuss all of these verses with you guys here. In verses 11-13, in Nain there was a dead son that was being carried out and the Lord saw this widow that had lost her only son and was watching him being carried out. Jesus had compassion for this woman and he told her not to cry. In verses 14-15, Jesus performed this miracles sign and he rose this man from the dead and gave him back to his mother and this shows the great power of Jesus Christ. This is one of the many miraculous signs that we see in these books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John that Jesus performed. In verses 16-17, these people thought that Jesus was a great prophet and that God was going to help his people, but they didn't understand that Jesus was God the Son. Jesus was fully man and fully God. Jesus came to the earth to save the world and to give eternal life to whoever asks Jesus for forgiveness and asks him to come into their hearts.

Here are 3 takeaways to write down:

1. We are all unworthy of the presence of Jesus

- We are all sinners, we are all mere humans, and none of us are worthy of Jesus' presence, but Jesus loves us all, he is always near us, and if we just reach out to him he's right there with us.

2. Jesus has great spiritual authority

3. Jesus is full of compassion and mercy

Luke Ch 7 Part 1 Study Guide

  1. Why did the centurion not think that he was worthy to come to Jesus and ask Him to heal his servant?

  2. What did the centurion understand about Jesus?

  3. In verse 13, why did Jesus tell the widow not to cry?

  4. In verse 16, why were the people filled with awe?

  5. What is your biggest takeaway from this Bible study?

So that concludes this Bible study on part 1 of chapter 7 of the Book of Luke. Tomorrow we're going to go into part 2, so make sure you stay tuned for that.

I love you guys so much.
