What is our daily bread?
Why is it important?
How do we receive it?
If you are a new Christian, just getting into your Bible, or just diving deeper into your faith, then you've probably been reading or hearing about our daily bread. You may have been asking yourself one of all of the questions above. In today's episode, I will be answering these questions and more. I will be pairing this with prayer and scripture.
First, I want to say a quick prayer: "LORD, I pray that you lift up every person reading this right now. Holy Spirit, please guide me and move me to do the will of God the Father. Use me as a vessel for your work LORD. Please help me to make an impact in other people's lives. I pray that we are able to see the truth, know the truth, discern the truth, and live by the truth. I can't thank you enough for every single thing that you've done LORD. You are so incredible and I love You with every ounce of my being. In Jesus' name, Amen."

Now let's get into some scripture:
"The entire Israelite community departed from Elim and came to the Wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had left the land of Egypt. The entire Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by pots of meat and ate all the bread we wanted. Instead, you brought us into this wilderness to make this whole assembly die of hunger!” Then the Lord said to Moses, “I am going to rain bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. This way I will test them to see whether or not they will follow my instructions. On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather on other days.” -Exodus 16:1-5
Okay, so a little backstory to what is happening in these verses here. In the beginning of the Book of Exodus, it talks about how the Israelites are slaves in Egypt and the Lord had come to Moses and said to bring the Israelites out of Egypt. So Moses got the Israelites out of Egypt. There was the whole thing in chapter 14 of the Book of Exodus where the Red Sea was parted and all the Egyptians running after the Israelites ended up dying in the Red Sea and the Israelites were on the way to the Promised Land. In these verses here that we just read, they were grumbling because they were so hungry, they were in the wilderness and they were like, "We should have just died in Egypt. At least we had food there. Now we're just going to starve to death." In verse four, the Lord said, "I am going to rain bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day."
If you continue to read on in chapter 16 of Exodus, it talks about whenever the people were gathering the bread from heaven, the people that gathered a lot, they measured it and they didn't have any surplus. The people that gathered a little didn't have any shortage. Moses had told them not to leave any for the morning, but the people that did leave part of it until the morning, it stunk and there were worms in it. The only time when the next morning there were no maggots or anything in the bread and it didn't stink was on the seventh day because the Lord said on the sixth day, you're gonna gather enough for two days. So on the seventh day, they rested and they were able to eat that bread from heaven that God had provided them.
This story is a perfect demonstration of how God provides us with our daily bread. He gives us exactly how much we need for today, every day, and we have to keep coming back to the Lord for that daily bread. He sustains us, but He also wants a relationship with us. We need to continue to go to the Lord for our daily bread. Now I want to get into the New Testament because not only does the Lord provide food for us every day, but our daily bread is actually something so much better than food.
“What sign, then, are you going to do so that we may see and believe you?” they asked. “What are you going to perform? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.”Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, Moses didn’t give you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” Then they said, “Sir, give us this bread always.” “I am the bread of life,” Jesus told them. “No one who comes to me will ever be hungry, and no one who believes in me will ever be thirsty again. But as I told you, you’ve seen me, and yet you do not believe. Everyone the Father gives me will come to me, and the one who comes to me I will never cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. This is the will of him who sent me: that I should lose none of those he has given me but should raise them up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him will have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” -John 6:30-40
So our bread from heaven is Jesus Christ. He is the bread of life. Whenever we come to Him, we're not going to have that spiritual hunger or that spiritual thirst ever again because He quenches that. He gives us the Holy Spirit. Whenever we're saved by Jesus, we have the Holy Spirit living inside of us and we have the fruit of the Spirit. We have to ask the Lord to reveal the fruit of the spirit in our hearts, because even though we have it doesn't mean that we are constantly keeping in step with the Spirit. So it's important for us to ask the Father to reveal the fruit of the Spirit in our hearts and ask the Holy Spirit to consume us. We also need to be praying and filling ourselves with Jesus every single day. The manna from heaven that God gave our ancestors is nothing in comparison to the manna from heaven that we have. We have Jesus Christ. He is the bread of life. He is our portion.
There is a song, if you haven't heard it, I highly recommend you go and listen to it right after this episode because it's amazing. It is called "Daily Bread" by Pat Barrett and Kari Jobe. It's just such a beautiful song and it really helps remind us that Jesus is our daily bread and He is our portion.
"My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart, my portion forever." -Psalm 73:26
So our flesh is weak and our heart is deceiving above all else. Our flesh and our hearts are going to fail us, but God is the strength of our hearts. He is our portion forever and we have access to that daily bread. He's always right there with us. It's important for us to pray to Him, to keep in constant communication with him, and just speak to Him throughout the day, through every decision that we make in life, and everything that we're doing. Sometimes I feel like if I was being recorded throughout the day, every day, people would think I was literally insane because it looks like I'm just sitting here talking to myself throughout the day, but really I'm just having conversations with God. That is so important for us to do, keeping in step with the Spirit and staying in constant communication with the Father. Also, it's important to read our Bible. The Bible is full of the words of God. Whenever you need to see the truth about certain things or you need words for when you're anxious, when you're sad, when you're going through tough times, pretty much any answer that you need is in the Bible. Or if it's not specifically in the Bible, you'll get the answers by praying and in God's perfect timing, He will always come through.
Then Jesus left the Jordan, full of the Holy Spirit, and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over, he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread." But Jesus answered him, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone.” -Luke 4:1-4
So Jesus had been fasting for 40 days and He was full of the Holy Spirit. It says He was led by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil, and he was hungry. Even though He was fully God, He was still fully man. So he was hungry and the devil tempted Him and was trying to tell Him to tell the stone to become bread so
He could eat it. Jesus Said something so important right here that we can use against the enemy when he's trying to tempt us. "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word from the mouth of God." Now I want to go back into the book of John and we're going to go to chapter one. While I was coming up with Scripture to talk about with this episode, It dawned on me that whenever Jesus says the scripture that we just went over, it talks about the word of God in the book of John.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it." -John 1:1-5
In the beginning was the word. What word is John talking about here? John is talking about Jesus Christ. He says "The word was With God and the word Was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through him and apart from him, not one thing was created that has been created." So Jesus Christ Is the Word Of God. Jesus Christ says, "Man cannot live on bread alone (or food alone,) but on every word From the mouth of God." We cannot live without Jesus. He is the bread of life just like He says in John chapter six. He died on the Cross for our sins to give us Eternal life. Without Him, we are dead in our sins, but we're alive in Jesus. He Is our portion, He is our strength, He is our daily bread, and we have His spirit, the Holy Spirit Living inside of us.
We have to Fill ourselves every day with the Spirit, walk and step with the Spirit, and keep in constant communication with God. The Lord provides every single thing that we could ever need. He Gives us more than we could think or imagine. Sometimes the things that we want in life we don't receive because it's not for our good. "He works all things together for the good of those who love him, who are called according to his purpose." So just like we See in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, where Jesus went to the Mount of Olives to pray to the Father. He was constantly pouring out His Self to other people. He was healing people, He was teaching people, He was being a teacher and a mentor to his disciples. He was constantly pouring out, and in order for Him to be filled up, He went to his secret place, prayed to God the Father, and spent alone time with him. We also have to designate time every single day to spend alone with the Father and fill ourselves. There are so many things throughout our day where we're constantly pouring out to our family, to our job, pouring out to all these different things, and we need to be filled up too. We have to constantly be filled with the Spirit and a way to do that is by staying in constant communication with the Lord, spending quiet time with our Father, and recognizing and telling him, "Thank you Lord for giving me my daily bread. You are my portion and I cannot do this without you." We just have to lean on him through every aspect of our lives.
“Therefore, you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, your name be honored as holy. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."
-Matthew 6:9-13
This is Jesus teaching us how to pray. In verse 11, he says, "Give us today our daily bread." So the Lord will provide food for us, but our daily bread is Jesus. We can see right here in this prayer that we need to ask the Lord to give us our daily bread. Our daily bread is not only food, but it's things that are necessary for the day. Our portion that we need every single day is Jesus Christ. We cannot live this life without Him. He is the very most important thing in our lives. So if you haven't already, spend some time with Jesus today, get in your secret place, and just talk to the Lord. Spend that quiet time with Him, have that conversation with Him, be still, listen to what He's telling you, and let Him fill you up. Be filled with the Spirit today and keep in step with the Spirit. It's so important for us to do.
I hope this episode helped you guys to realize what our daily bread is, why it's important for us to have our daily bread, and to realize that Jesus Christ is the bread of life. He is our portion, and He is our daily bread.
I love you guys so much.
